bin collections

I see the cooncil are refusing to empty grey wheelie bins that have lids not fully closed !

I've heard of this happening elsewhere around the UK.......... But please tell me you're joking in this instance.

In order to get the flaming thing even nearly closed, I have to do the "wheelie-bin-dance" every night before collection day - it's a bit like treading grapes, but not as pleasant....... and even less pleasant if you've "had a few" and happen to fall off the bloody thing.

Well, if that is the case there will be quite a few people who will not be very happy, especially if they are not given any warning. I know that it has been happening elsewhere but haven't seen anything in the news or on the council's website

Only some of the more fascist English councils have been doing this so far.
Anyway, he prompted me to comment, so I suppose it works.
Maybe I'll start a thread suggesting that photography is going to be banned in public places and stand back.

I'm afraid it's no joke..... you get a nice little label attached to the bin telling you why it has not been emptied... Nice of the council to warn us about this

I've heard of this before in Penicuik, it takes working to rule a bit far though!
You can request a bigger wheelie but it normally depends on how many people in your household rather than how much waste you need to cram in.

In Tesco on Tuesday I overheard two assistants talking of this foolishness because some of the shop bins weren't emptied this week.

I don't think anyone is just stirring here, sadly. It does reflect the repressive state we live in, though.

i noted a number of bins in my street were put out with lids not fully closed. These were all emptied when i came home.

Does this mean the council are not enforcing this ruling all over yet, the lids have to be a certain amount open before rejected or the bin men forgot

To be honest there are houses that repeatedly put out over filled bins, these are then pecked by birds and the contents chucked all over the street. or the wind blows the contents everywere. if it prevents this i am all in favour.

I'm trying to grasp the logic of refusing to empty an "overfilled" bin. If the occupant has no car with which to take any excess to the tip, then their situation can only get worse, leading to a further backlog of uncollected waste. If they do have a car then they will have to make an unnessesary journey, which goes against anything eco-friendly. Additionally, the reason the lid should be closed (apart from the obligatory 'elf & safety considerations) is to avoid maggots and vermin, so how does leaving it behind help in any possible way?

What worries me is if they decide to enforce this rule over Christmas and New Year when it is nigh on impossible to avoid the situation where the lid cannot be closed properly. On the other hand maybe it's just one or two bin men trying to be super efficient at their jobs.

This has everything to do with an oppressive state but not in the way you might think. This is to do with Midlothian Council's grand plan called Modernising Midlothian which is supposed to be about pay equality. Bin men have been hit hard and a lot of them are working to rule, hence the reason bins that do not have the lid closed are not being emptied in some places.
