What is going on?

Just bought the Advertiser today and find that there have been two more attacks in Penicuik, including another one on a soldier based at Glencorse. Just what is happening in the town, what are the police doing to prevent it and why are only some of the incidents publicised?
It is getting to the stage where people will not want to go out in the evenings and I imagine that the soldiers will be wanting to take some of their "equipment" with them when they venture outside the barracks.
