Fuel shortages Empty
PostSubject: Fuel shortages   Fuel shortages Icon_minitimeSun Apr 20, 2008 7:06 pm

Saw today (Sunday and also on Saturday) that getting fuel at Sainsburys involved quite a wait. It appears they might run out there soon thanks to the planned strike next weekend at Grangemouth with the government saying "don't panic buy!" which, of course causes exactly that to happen.
Any other reports on the situation from around the county?

I had to go into Sainsbury's on my way to the market at lunch time as one of the kids needed to withdraw some money from the cash machine. I noticed that the petrol station did seem to be rather busy. However, after I heard the news it suddenly dawned on me what was going on. As I use the bus most of the time, it shouldn't affect me as much as some people. However, does anyone know what will happen with the buses? Do they have a separate supply source?

At the Gyle yesterday and the Morrisons petrol station there was busy but nothing out of the ordinary. However the thing that amazed me was 104 for a litre of unleaded, the Shell station at Craigleith when I passed on Saturday was 105 a litre and this morning when I passed Angle Park in Penicuik - 108 for unleaded and 120 for diesel! Times like these I'm glad I use the bus for the daily commute..

What is the betting on the prices going up even further "due to the strike" then the next set of profit figures for the oil companies being even bigger.

Well, I've just been along to Angle Park garage to have my tyre fixed. They have sold out of petrol and it will be tomorrow before they have more supplies. It seems that Sainsbury's at Straiton also ran out.

Sounds like their warnings had the same effect as Cpl Jones - "don't panic!" so now "we're all doomed" as Private Fraser would say!

Oh dear (Godfrey)

I was shopping at Tesco Esbank yesterday. Yellow-jacketed employee directeing the hoards at the pumps. Doubtless it sold out too.

I'm in the position where I actually NEED petrol today - I have about 10 miles max left in the tank. If angle park isn't replenished this morning I'm not going to be happy.

The whole thing is quite farcical.

The situation certainly isn't being helped by the eejits queueing up to stick an extra fiver's worth in their tanks!

I eventually managed to get petrol at Tesco Hardengreen on Monday night. The queue was way to busy at the back of 6pm so I thought I'd pop round after visiting a friend. There was still a queue at 10pm! Anyway, I wasn't panic buying - I needed petrol - the wee light had come on to say I was running low!

Typical! they say that there are no problems at all with fuel supplies then Lothian Buses look likely to run out. Now I see that they have been assured of supplies - hopefully some idiot who decided to prioritise deliveries to filling stations has had a severe kick up the backside!

I see that prices are rocketing up as usual - what is the highest price locally. BP in Penicuik now at 108.9p for petrol and 120.9p for diesel.

I checked the Lothian buses Website earlier today and couldn't find any mention of the possible fuel shortages. However, as Sam says I read on the BBC Website that motorists were to be the priority. Now it seems that everyone will be treated the same http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/edinburgh_and_east/7364936.stm

I went for the weekly shopping at Cameron Toll today and as it is close to the end of the month went to top up my diesel. The forecourt wasn't busy but nevertheless instead of waiting until after the shopping I decided to buy the fuel first. The price for the diesel was £1.14 per litre. Only after filling up did I discover that they were offering 5p of a litre of fuel if you spent £50 on groceries Crying or Very sad However, I still have the coupon which is valid for 28 days.

See the prices at our friendly local BP in Penicuik are up again, now 110.9p for petrol and 123.9p for diesel. Strange how there are no protests happening at all - I remember when I was at school and the price had reached £1.75 a GALLON, people said there would be riots if it ever went above £2 per gallon.

Prices are up again with another increase this afternoon so now at 114.9p for petrol and a ridiculous 131.9p for diesel. Bet all those people who bought diesels in order to save money must be kicking themselves now!

Unfortunately, some of us don't have much of a choice when it comes to diesels....

at the weekend, I did notice the garage in Gilmerton (Scottish Fuels?) was charging 132.5 for diesel and 118.3 for petrol.

I was one of those that changed from petrol to diesel. The main reason at the time was that they were more efficient and reliable and the price was cheaper than petrol. However, it certainly has swung the other way and I was surprised at just how wide the gap has become. What is of more concern though is that with the price of diesel increasing so much, it will also mean higher food prices and travel on buses and trains Sad

I've still got a coupon that gives me 5p off a litre at Sainsburys and it expires on Saturday, just in time for my monthly fill up Smile
