Well that's a real shame........ A nice place run by nice people and serving excellent food.

Maybe it was inevitable though. Much as I liked the place, it was maybe inevitable that it'd close sooner or later. In the many times I've eaten there, I've never seen it busy.
The owner reckoned that was because they did Northern Indian food instead of the East Indian stuff that the British are more used to...... I reckon it was the lousy location, set back from the main road.

And yet another one!!! The Midlothian Energy Advice Centre is closed "due to unforeseen circumstances" but hopes to re-open soon. At this rate there will be nothing left in the town although not really a surprise as I hardly ever saw anyone in there!

Good to see that the Community Council are objecting to Scotmid's plan for the former butcher's shop in the High Street. Maybe the council can finally get something done about it?

The reason Brian Sibson moved out was because of the way Scotmid kept on hiking the rent. As long as landlords refuse to take account of local economic circumstances there will be empty shops.
In the case of Penicuik (and numerous other towns in the UK in a similar situation vis-a-vis major out-of-town or 'off-centre' developments) it is becoming very difficult to compete on price or even, because of ease of access and unlimited parking, on convenience.
As customers we all know that. It appears as property owners landlords are unaware of these simple facts of life.
Don't ask me what the cure is but yet more takeaways is certainly not it! Unfortunately local councils' hands are tied. Changes to the planning would seem to be the only answer.

Hi Hollymckay. I am afraid I don't know the answer to your question but welcome to the forum.

Two NEW places due to open soon as the unit near the clock tower is now to become a "therapy" place and the Indian Grill near the Royal Bank is almost finished too!
Of course the big question is how long they will stay open?

The Peni Deli joins the long list of places to close down in the town. We now have the former co-op place, the butcher and Green Energy Advice place all "to let" in the High Street.
Anyone got any real, positive new about retail units in the town centre?

Turkish barber coming to the Square in the former Salsa's Diner place - something new for a change!

And a very interesting idea of what to do with the town centre on the Penicuik Cuckoo site:

I hear that there has been some activity in Ingman's old shop. Does anyone know what's happening?

Anyone know if there are any plans for the old autoparts place next to the Belgian Consulate? It's been a total mess for years. Who owns it?

From what I heard, it is now owned by the same guy who has the Corfu takeaway next door and permission was granted last November to convert it in to a "mixed use of ice cream parlour/hot food takeaway, restaurant and flatted dwelling (sui generis)"

Full info on the Midlothian Planning Site:

Other people say that the building is only fit for demolition and there is still no sign of anything happening!

Just what I (and most other people in Penicuik) thought about this. Of course, nothing has happened yet and with 4 other food outlets sitting empty at the moment I cannot see why anyone would spend the money!

And another one goes......the Cheque Centre outlet in John Street is shutting down this weekend. People have been asking if it will become a charity shop or another takeaway....how about a charity takeaway for a double whammy!

 Very Happy

One more to add to the tally (how many that is I cannot remember) as Demi's hairdesser in the Square shuts up shop.

Another possible closure as the Nickel and Dime store was closed today with their window display all cleared out. Anyone know anything about the situation? Sad

Could be some positive news though as the former Edinburgh Crystal warehouse on Edinburgh Farm Road appears to have been sold or let with workmen busy at the site. Very Happy

I was in Penicuik today and saw this strange sign in the Nickel and Dime store. I think the letters 'I N' should be read as a 'W'.

Andy
That sign reminds me of one on the old toll office at Stewponey Lock on the Staffordshire & Worcester Canal. The building had been in use for several years as a typical canal shop (postcards, maps, lock handles, ice cream, that sort of thing) but eventually became a sort of hippy, New Age, fortune telling place.
We passed through one summer and the notice on the door read "Closed due to ill health". Coming back up the canal later in the week the words "ill health" had been crossed out and replaced with "IN JAIL!!".
Locals confirmed that was indeed the real reason!
Shocked

The Nickel N Dime is now up to let and on checking the Shepherd site to see what silly amount of money they want I saw this about the butchers shop:

http://www.search.shepherd.co.uk/?id=37615&do=search&for=2&branch=&kwa%5B%5D=EH26&minprice=0&maxprice=99999999999&type%5B%5D=&Search=Search&id=37615&order=2&page=0&do=search

Nothing about Nickel n Dime yet!

Sibsons is supposedly going to be a kebab shop so we can expect vast crowds as this massive boost to retail in Penicuik opens! The town centre must be in a bad state when even the charity shops are closing down (BHF shuts in May)!!!

I am not sure what we need, and what would be profitable....

I guess rates are all too high for new startups.

But then again, Peebles survives and thrives.... so it must be all about reaching critical mass.

Nickel and Dime was never busy when i was in, but I do expect it did ok, as it was handy if you were stuck for something or dont have time/car to go to Straiton. There seem to be a few theories around as to what happened.
