| Guid morning' folks! I came across your site a week or so ago,but this is the first chance I had to say hello. I was born in Penicuik in 1950,but the family moved away in 1965. I don't know if it's an age thing, but I look back on my childhood and realise that my happiest days were spent growing up in Penicuik. School summer holidays always brought adventure and we were out the house from early morning until dusk. Just making our own entertainment and never causing harm or bother to other folks. Different days I suppose. Lifetime friendships were made. My mother died in 2003 and up until her death, she still sent and received Xmas cards from old friends and neighbours in Penicuik. 38 years !! The photo below was taken in Dick Terrace in 1954. This is me(the car wissna oors!! It belonged tae oor 'rich' uncle an' auntie, who used to visit on their way down south............... | |

| Hi Dick and welcome to the forum. I originally came from Musselburgh, married and moved to Edinburgh. Eventually my wife and I decided we needed a garden so we found that Wimpey were building houses at Glencorse. We bought one and have lived there since 1980. The things I love most about Penicuik are the Pentland hills and the really nice walks. Where are you living now? | |

| Hi Andy.
We've been up in Aberdeen since 1965. At the time,my Dad worked in the Penicuik papermills. Even back then,he always said the writing was on the wall for the industry as a whole,as Eskmills had been finding the going tough against foreign manufacturers. However,he was offered a job in Aberdeen and that's why we moved.
I've been back for a visit once or twice to Penicuik, although it must be around 15 years now since the last one. Nice wee forum you have here. | |

| Hi Andy, I have logged on to the site and found your posting. Like you I was also born in Penicuik, but in 1941 and left at the tender age of 18 to join the Royal Navy after my schooling at Penicuik, then Lasswade (the old and new schools) I left at 15 years old and went into the coal mining industry which I hated. This encouraged me to join the RN as a Radio Operator. After 27 years serving on many types of ships including aircraft carriers and submarines and all over the world I left as a Chief Communications Technician and left to work in Cheltenham, who after a year sent me to a radio station in Scarborough where I worked until my retirement. I now live in Filey. I used to return to Penicuik but must admit I haven't been back for about 15 years now.
Name is David Hamilton and was born in Thorburn Terrace. My parents were John and Joan Hamilton, they moved to Glen View and then John Street (next to the miner's club) where they stayed for the rest of their lives.
So if anyone knows me or has heard of me please get in touch. I have many relatives still living in the area and I am related to The Barnes formerly of Glen Place, Ella who lives in Bonnyrigg and Betty who has recently passsed away, The Mckeans formerly of Glaskhill Terrace and Cuiken Avenue.
So if anyone has hear of me or my family please get
All the Best
And looking forward to hearing from you

| Hi David and welcome to the forum. It was Dick who was born in Penicuik, as I come from Musselburgh and moved here in 1980. You certainly seem to have had a long and interesting career. Have you tried looking for your relatives on facebook? It's very popular although I must admit I have tried to avoid it for a while. However, I have given in and have now have a presence there. Even my wife who is almost clueless about computers has joined and is making use of the e-pad I gave her for Christmas | |

| Hi, Thanks for the info. Yes I've tried Facebook and don't like it, or I should really say I don't trust it, even although my two granddaughters swear by it. One day maybe

| Hi David, Was trawling the net trying to find old photos of Penicuik to show mum and dad when I happened to come across your posting. Read it out to mum. She didn't know Betty had passed away. I haven't been back to Penicuik in years- the last time was for an old neighbours funeral! Mike and I still live in Macclesfield but have had a holiday cottage business in west Wales for 4 years so travel over there every weekend. Have a look - its www.pentrebach.comMum and dad are still plodding on but not in good health. By the way, I found a great site 'What's On Penicuik' that has loads of old photos of Penicuik, many including people that mum recognised. All the best Wilma e logged on to the site and found your posting. | I also went to Penicuik Secondary school and left in 1965. My Dad worked in Dalmore Mill. I had relatives in Penicuik going back to before I was born. I remember Ella Barnes as my best friend Jean lived B in Glen Place next door to Ella and her husband. I still have relatives in Penicuik and Jean and family still live there. My Grandad Byers was fixing a gas leak when he was overcome by fumes and fell off a ladder in ,around 1950 in Penicuik.

| You must have left for Edinburgh just as I was moving from Edinburgh to the new houses that were being built at Glencorse. There have been a few changes since then especially with the houses that have replaced Dalmore mill after its closure. The crystal factory has gone and now they have started to build houses at the back of Mauricewood. | |

| Hi, lived in Auchendiinny for a wee while too when I was about 8 or 9 and remember the pond or some kind of water on left down the hill. We were warned to keep away and the adults told us kids it was bottomless and something would grab us and pull us in. Terrified after that, ha ha. It wirke though. | |

| I take it this is the pond that you mean. Sadly, it has been drained now and all the foliage has been cleared away.

| Great to see a photo of the old pond. Wonder what was lurking at the bottom after all, lol | |

| This is what it looked like after they cleared away all the foliage. I don't think the pond was very deep. | |
