Owen_Thompson via Twitter: Midlothian Planning Committee approve plans for new supermarket and petrol station at old Dansco Dairy site [Loanhead]. http://bit.ly/b489DS

I wonder who'll be going in there?

You can see the full details of the application here on Midlothian Online Planning:
https://planning-applications.midlothian.gov.uk/OnlinePlanning/centralDistribution.do?action=dispatch&caseType=Application&caseNo=09/00362/FUL

I would not expect anything to happen fast - remember that the Callyr Inn was approved for demolition in 2000 but is still standing. I like the councillors comments about new jobs which don't mention how many shops in other parts of the county will close because of this development.

It should provide some interesting competition for Sainsburys, unless they've decided they want to move.

Thanks Sam for the link. There's no mention of a supermarket brand that I can see in the planning application so you could be correct. Nothing might happen for a while.

It might be a case that the architect/developer are just looking to secure planning permision before approaching prospective tennants. It would be good competition for Sainsbury's and other supermarkets in the area, although there is the issue that it might put smaller shops out of business.

This planning application may also be the reason why Sainsbury's are planning to revamp their store and rebuild the petrol station.

The article in the Advertiser this week mentions Morrisons as the possible store to fill this site which sounds logical as Asda are the only other possibility. The competitition might be good, especially on petrol prices, but how many other shops would be forced out of business and how bad would the traffic jams be?
