Okay, I've just been for a cycle and noticed that the boards had been taken down from the former Spar shop at the clock tower near Penicuik. Lo and behold, we now have another bookies to add to our wonderful collection. There is one at Tesco, this new one, then if you walk another 50 yards there is another one and finally in Penicuik you can find yet another. Anyone care to take bets on when they will open another one Rolling Eyes

Ladbrokes at the Clock Tower is a replacement for the matchbox at Edinburgh Road, or so I'm told. Three bookies in a town this size isn't excessive.
Wait till you've got another two supermarkets! Very Happy

Let's just hope that they don't turn the matchbox one into another charity shop then Smile

This is a joke post!!!! flower

What I am surprised about, Sue, is that Midlothian council have not promoted their excellent planning skills. (I assume they have some sort of say in this). Any punter on the Deanburn/Ladywood estates is disadvantaged. They will have to walk at least another 150 yds to put on their bets. However, the new premises are on an easy bus route from those estates. There is no extra crossing of dangerous roads, unless you count the Tesco car park entrance. I am sure the new facilities will be a great improvement on the old hut, possible with state-of-the art tellies.

Detractors may say that this is yet more centralization of facilities in Penicuik town, when most of us live well outside! What are the planners thinking of!

But now they can go to the bank for their money, then the paper shop for their paper and finally into the bookies, as all the facilities are next to each other The miners club is just next door if they fancy a drink as well Smile

I would have thought Hills would be planning to shut down one of their two shops, surely? Then again the three bookies have survived for some years, so I guess even Ladbrokes moving up might not harm trade.

btw, does anyone know the ins and outs of what's happening at the old Laddies site? I presumed Tesco would want it - maybe so as to have a petrol station there - but seeing as it's up for let maybe this isn't the case? scratch

It looks as if something might be happening with the bookie's hut as the "to let" sign has been taken down. No idea yet but let us hope it will be something positive as Penicuik certainly needs it.
