| I found this new website today http://www.britainfromabove.org.uk/asearch?search=penicuikAt the moment the site seems to be a bit slow, so you will need to be patient. I particularly liked this picture showing Penicuik in 1929. No Penicuik high school and the town centre has not been pedestrianised. _________________ Andy

| According to Penicuik High school's website this will be the 75th anniversary which means it was built about 8 years later around 1937. Just think, World war II was still 10 years away when this photo was taken. You can also count the number of motor vehicles on one hand. _________________ Andy

| Here are another two old pictures. This one shows Dalmore paper mill taken in 1933. In the top left hand corner you can see the old viaduct which has been demolished. Another view of Penicuik showing St Mungo's church taken in 1929. _________________ Andy

| I needed a second look at that first photo before I realised how the camera angle has distorted the perspective. What looks like a massive open space at the top of the picture is the Public Park (no rugby clubhouse, no pavilion, no path across to what is now Bellmans Road, and of course no avenue of "Coronation" trees) and the site of the High School isn't even in the picture. The building top left is the Craigiebield and it looks as if work is just starting on the first of the cottages between there and the Navaar. Fascinating! | |
