I stopped using 123-reg as my host some time ago because I didn't think they were all that reliable.
I can't believe that there is a site problem as such with the pen-y-cog.org site. It's powered by WordPress and they arereliable.

They don't seem to be doing very well as there seem to be constant problems with their sites or they change from one host to another meaning you need new URLs to access them. Apart from the "free" webhosts, most of them seem to be pretty reliable so I cannot see how the Cuckoos are having so many problems. Unfortunately, in today's world, if your website keeps changing / failing the people will not take you seriously.
As for their newspaper, did anyone get a paper copy?

The point I made elsewhere. And equally important if it never gets updated which is why the on-line Cuckoo is so much more important than the paper version.
The potential here is fantastic — if I could have had this technology back in 1985 I would have had a field day!

Finally managed to read it online, looks very good and well put together - just a shame that by the time we're reading it, everyone knows about it anyway so its not quite news..

Any sightings of the second one yet, due out mid June?

I have to agree with Omala:

The website says they have stopped delivering but that "most" retailers will stock the paper. Good sense since a) it cuts overheads; b) those without internet access are more likely to be out and about in Penicuik shops.

I doubt there will be a second edition this month. The Cuckoo's last Facebook posting said they could not be contacted from June 22 to June 28. I also thought there was talk of a special Olympic torch edition?

The Cuckoo launched its Community Cuckoo Benefits earlier this month ie how much it was willing to pay for contributions. I won't be giving up the day job anytime soon!

Take it we can assume that this title that was to be the best thing for local news has, as most people suspected been a complete waste of time.. All the fanfare and what did we get, one issue that was so out of date before it was printed and nothing since..

The most "latest" news of the Cuckoo was posted at the beginning of July and suggested that the next edition will be published in August. The Olympic torch special appears to have been given the bump! If I was an advertiser I wouldn't be impressed with this service. We wait with baited breath to see if edition two sees the light of day.

At this rate, if they ever do get any news out, it's going to be awfully cauld kale...

ah mind o the poyem .

" Children’s cuckoo rhymes such as:

The cuckoo comes in April,
He sings his song in May,
In June he has another note,
In July he flies away.

are based on observation. This behavioural description is true here too, as the cuckoo disappears again in July, heading for the hills of North Africa and beyond. "

According to their facebook page they went on holiday for three weeks from 14 July, so there will be nothing until August at the earliest.

They have closed down their website now to concentrate on the paper so who knows what is going on ..... they seem to change their minds every other day about their plans!

Perhaps it is a cover for CONFUSED.COM? I certainly am!

Can only assume that no one has paid for advertising or so few have it's not worth while. What I don't get is if they are serious then why not run updates on the website, surely better to tell people what is going on - even if they do insist on the paper itself not being online, then at least any visitors to the site would see when the next issue is expected, what it might contain, where to get it etc....

PostSubject: Re: Penicuik Cuckoo   Penicuik Cuckoo Icon_minitimeThu Aug 09, 2012 9:51 pm

Wrong decision!
For the following reasons:
1. The future of local media is the internet, not dead trees ...
1a. ... and the number of people with internet access, even in Penicuik, is considerably greater than those without.
2. Maintaining the on-line edition is cheaper than trying to assemble, print and distribute a paper edition.
3. It's also easier.

I could smell this coming. First it was withdrawing delivery after only one edition but "shops would be stocking it" (aye, right!); then the week's break at the end of June with no sign of the promised second issue, then a three-week holiday in July; then an announcement that they're closing the web site to concentrate on the print edition.
Reminds me a bit of the guy with piles who sat and scratched his elbow all day.

I agree with musicman. It's possible that ad revenue hasn't come up to scratch but that's all the more reason to dump the (costly) print edition and concentrate on the on-line version. I don't like the sound of this business at all, I'm afraid.

PS -- for those of you who know me, you'll be pleased to hear that my younger son and his wife have provided me with a grand-daughter (we'd just about given up hope Crying or Very sad), name Ruby Anne, I'm told. cheers

Looks like the Cuckoo has returned though it does not have much to say judging by the "new" website here:

I wonder which "univeristy" the writer went to???

Am I thick or what?
I've clicked on both the new stories — Railway and Flatlining Retail — and the clicks don't take me anywhere useful, certainly not to either of those two stories.
And if I'm too dim to get it right ...
